Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth’s Synastry: Soulmates or Cellmates?

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth’s synastry is important for all of us, especially those of us who are interested in strong relationship dynamics.

At the time of writing, the world has just witnessed the passing of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and long-term consort of the Queen. Decried by many as a racist and social parasite, the Duke instead saw himself as the “world’s most experienced ribbon-cutter”, fulfiling a gruelling yet largely ceremonial role for over seventy years. Having distinguished himself in combat in the Second World War, he seems to have been quite content to be the supporting hand of the Queen- despite being an obviously intelligent and feisty character himself. Married for over seventy years, this couple has stood the test of time much like the dear old couple down the road who have managed to stick to it through thick and thin. A lot of us, despite whatever political or social views we might hold in regards to monarchy, have viewed the spectacle of the elderly couple in a loving light- and have felt deeply for the Queen after the decease of her husband. As a society, we tend to value longevity in partnerships, and it does not get much more long-lasting and public than this one. So, let’s look at Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth’s synastry.

We well might ask ourselves: is this a generational thing? I know that people of that era took their responsibilities and traditions far more seriously than people seem to do now. Marriage is far more disposable to the people of my generation. Were they truly in love? Was it a thing that was more about duty? What are the secrets behind the royal curtain? Ah, my curious reader, astrology comes to help us peer through that veil and unlock the stories of common humanity that can link the lofty crown to the experience of the street.

Chart 1: Queen Elizabeth

Before I look into synastry, I always take a look at the individual charts in question. Therefore- because she still reigns as Queen, let’s begin with Elizabeth’s chart:

Astrological chart of Queen Elizabeth II

Well! A T-square to Saturn, with Capricorn Rising. Nothing can indicate any more clearly that this person is born to a life of duty, restrictions- privilege perhaps, but there are definite blocks to this person’s freedom in life. When we note that that Saturn rules her ascendant and also squares her Mars/Jupiter conjunction, that limitation is even more underlined. I also note that I am writing this on her birthday- I did not know that before 🙂

Saturn and Jupiter in square and Saturn RX in Scorpio in the ninth house indicates some difficulty in expressing her philosophical ideals. They are dear to her, her Jupiter is in her first house. She’s gracious, effervescent, makes everyone else happy- but there is a significant problem in that she has to dissemble, swallow her tongue a lot about what she truly thinks. Looking to her Mercury, it is in Aries in the second house- in conjunction to Uranus (out of sign, but still a conjunction). As a matter of fact, she is actually quite brilliant intellectually- although her self-expression might be kept in a relatively limited circle (the second house).

Mars and Jupiter in Aquarius in the first house values truth, self-expression, liberation, brotherhood, togetherness. Indeed, one sees here her passion for the Commonwealth she has worked so hard for. With a sextile to the Sun and Moon, that passion forms part of her identity- which is a complex thing. The Sun might be both in Taurus and in Taurus’s own house, meaning that she stands firmly grounded in life- but the conjunction to Chiron and the trine to Neptune bespeak a sense of loss and sadness around her own identity. This is like the painful side of Pisces, someone who gives and gives and gives to the wrong kind of people and is often deceived by them. The South Node in the twelfth house further underscores that tendency to be overly self-sacrificing and self-effacing. With the Moon also affected by Neptune as well, one comes to the awareness that neither of her parents could have been much present. The upbringing was during the crisis of the Second World War, and the scars of emotional avoidance and a definite codependency are present. The Moon and Neptune in the seventh house could represent somewhat fickle loved ones and children, and we know the stories of how her children have created various disgraces.

With Mars/Jupiter opposite her Moon-Neptune conjunction, I see the definite impact of the war on her young psyche- the Motherland/Moon attacked by strong oppositional forces. Perhaps there were also arguments between her parents? In any case, again and again this person tries for peace above all other things.

Pluto is trine Venus almost exact- Pluto in the sixth house, Venus in the first house. This person is passionate about who and what she loves and she works damn hard for them and with them. Venus is in Pisces- there are some rose coloured glasses, some escapism here- perhaps to escape from the difficult upbringing, an ideal partner is always needed and envisioned. She is so strong, our Elizabeth- perhaps too strong- and needs someone to be strong with. Strong, but also fixed in her ways. That Scorpio Saturn, Taurus Sun, Leo Moon and Mars/Jupiter conjunction in Aquarius are nothing if not enduring. I do not see her retiring!

Chart 2: Prince Philip:

Now for Philip’s chart:

Astrological chart of Prince Philip Mountbatten

Here we have a clever and warlike Gemini with his Sun conjunct Mars, square Uranus, and a Pluto-Mercury conjunction in Cancer trine to Uranus in Pisces. But here we have another of Saturn’s little princelings- his Sun is square to Saturn almost exact, as is his Mars. Like his wife, he is limited in what he can say or do to an almost intolerable degree. Yet- clever! I don’t know much else that could indicate intelligence so strongly. This is not merely someone who thinks fast, they think deep- and they think in complex ways, for the good of all humanity. Like the Queen, this person is selfless with his Sun in sextile to Neptune- and perhaps even more lost. His Moon is also in Leo and also conjunct Neptune, but sits in the 12th house- his emotional experiences exist almost in a vortex of repression and confusion. He is likely to struggle with confusion around the things he values most- with his Venus square to Neptune.

Jupiter is in the first house in Virgo, with the ascendant in Leo. This person can be quite arrogant and does talk a lot- he airs his views more frequently than does the Queen, although the Saturn eight degrees from Jupiter does keep that tendenct in check somewhat. Jupiter also rules his South Node- his views do have a tendency to be insufferable and archaic, but with the North Node in the third house (which rules Gemini), his very nature has a tendency to work past those ways of thinking. Jupiter is square the Sun, sextile Pluto, sextile Mercury and trine Venus (the inconjunct to Chiron is too wide)- his ego can be bumptious, brash and overbearing- but this is all to conceal the severe suffering he has experienced in his formative years. Like the Queen, he looks to his romantic pursuits as somewhat of an escape.

The synastry of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip: both charts together.

We can already see in Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s synastry what they have in common, and what might have brought them together. Both caged people, so to speak- both highly intelligent, traumatised and with a shared interest in love and romance as an escape from the horrors of the past. The synastry itself can show us more, which we will look into now:

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth's synastry chart.

The soul bond, to me, is so simple to see. Those conjunct Moon-Neptunes must have felt like they had found each other’s other half, especially as they are both natally in such romantic houses. It is undoubtedly a psychic bond that these two share.

He would have found her very beautiful. His Venus in Taurus is conjunct her Sun in Taurus- thankfully it is out of hail of her Chiron. Otherwise unaspected, this Venus finds such a strong companion in that Sun- and he is drawn to those themes in his life, being a Leo Rising. Also, his Mars sextiles her Neptune- physically and sexually, she is ideal to him. One notes the Mars-Jupiter conjunction trine the Sun-Mars conjunction; these two can express between one another what they are limited from expressing elsewhere. This is a very loving and sexually fulfiling partnership, which is especially important to a physical Taurus.

I notice that the woman’s Mars/Jupiter falls in his seventh house- perhaps she was the one to be the boss in the relationship, which is interesting to note as his Mars close to his sun indicates that he likes to be viewed as quite the man. But he is softer than she is on the inside, and perhaps relishes being able to relax and be bossed around from time to time in the privacy of his own space.

I’m sure they definitely have had their arguments. The Queen has suffered from fickle loved ones in her life, and his Uranus is conjunct her Venus while their Mercuries do not make a very harmonious team- at least on the surface of it. But they both have Uranus-Mercury aspects in the natal, which means they share a similar degree of intellect at least. The Queen would be more inclined to keep things simple, while he likes to be philosophical, abstract and rather prosy. His Pluto square to her Mercury might be a symptom of his intellect trying to wear her down at times, but always bringing her to a newer and brighter understanding of things.

I always look for tough Saturn aspects to show long-term commitment, and that Venus-Saturn opposition and Saturn-Mars inconjunction surely fit the bill. Maybe he was not always loyal in every single way? There have been whispers and rumours about that, let them stay as such. Whatever happened, they did manage to stay the course. That Venus affected by his Uranus falls in his eighth house- and her Saturn is in Scorpio. This woman is in it for the long haul, as represented by her Pluto trine Venus in the natal. Love is something that is of greater value when shared deeply and unconditionally, despite all kinds of secrets- through thick and thin, light and dark. Whatever your views on royalty may be, I hope you can keep her in your thoughts now he is gone.

SUN IN TAURUS

Now Aries season is lots of fun, as we all know. It’s always great to have the chance of a fresh start at things, and the childish enthusiasm of Aries energy can do all of us a lot of good. In many parts of the world, this part of the year is the beginning of spring- in others, the beginning of autumn. Whatever it is where you are, it represents needed change for all of us.

However, after the beginning has been initiated, we need to bring what we started into crystallisation and focus. Whereas the seasons begin with cardinal energy, soon enough it becomes time for fixed energy to take stage- for the foundation of something enduring to be established. And of course, after the most cardinal of cardinal signs (Aries) comes the most fixed of fixed signs- Taurus!

Good old Taurus! Stubborn, pleasure-seeking, self-absorbed, kindly, patient, money-focused and with a love of toilet humour. This sign has registered the shock of its first beginnings- of Mars/Aries energy carried over from other lifetimes. As if the individual in question has been through wars and times of scarcity, they tend to hoard and cling to what they have managed to gather. For them what is important and what brings the greatest happiness is what can bring them the greatest stability. A bull is a large creature- it needs plenty of grass to eat, and stable ground to stand upon. It cannot fossick and rage happily around a perilous scree slope like a ram! Therefore, they may spend most of their lifetime in the same peaceful meadow they were born in. They hate change!

These beings also value power and tradition, and quite a few dictators/otherwise tyrants have been Taureans (Hitler, Lenin, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein, Catherine the Great, Tsar Nicholas II and Oliver Cromwell- to name a few!). This is the sign of the Hierophant, who in tarot can represent authority figures not necessarily to be trusted in and of themselves. Because of their anxiety over safety and tendency to believe they know what’s best for everyone *else* in that regard, they can overstep themselves in asserting their dogma. A goose-stepping military parade just for them might actually be the only thing that helps them not feel scared to death of what’s to happen next in life. Remember as well that this sign forms the polarity for Scorpio, so the love of power is in there as well. However, on the positive side we have had some Sun in Taurus leaders who have provided a lot of good for humankind- Queen Elizabeth II springs to mind (her earlier namesake Elizabeth I had a Taurus Moon). Stability and accountability can be a nice thing as well.

This is the sign that connects us most to the Earth. Earth is, in and of itself, a slow-moving energy that keeps its own time and its own counsel. It works with a deep intuitive wisdom that is not spoken, but felt deeply within the physical form (Taurus is one of the more intuitive signs, in my experience). Taureans with the Sun in Taurus might often pooh-pooh astrology and tarot and things of the occult, because they do not seem to offer as much physical and tangible substance as the things of earth. However, those of us who work with the stars know the crucial value of staying connected to earth. Making money, making love, gardening, cooking a nice meal, creating something beautiful- these are the simple things that all of us would do well to connect with when we spend a lot of time up in the aether!

This year’s Taurus season will be quite an impactful one, given the fact Saturn and Jupiter are in Aquarius- forming a fixed square to the Sun in Taurus, Venus in Taurus and of course Uranus in Taurus. Uranus in Taurus is the real kicker- although it has been there for some time and will be there for some time still, this mover and shaker is causing all kinds of upsets in the world of finances, and of our firmly cemented belief. The last time Uranus was in Taurus the world saw the Great Depression and the rise of fascism, and one doesn’t have to be a genius to see the parallels to today’s world! The fixed battle between this Aquarius energy and Taurus energy is like the efforts of two prizefighters smashing the old order to pieces. We CANNOT live the way we have been living, getting all our nourishment from the supermarket, our clothing from sweatshop labourers, our love and affection from toxic partners. We might be scared to try something different, but for the good of the collective we need to be embracing our true and authentic journey. If you are not fully on that journey, expect to get caught in the punchup!

The Sun will be in Taurus from April 21- May 21 (NZ time) 🙂

VENUS IN TAURUS

Ah, Venus. What’s not to love about Venus? Indeed, her domain is all that is lovable- all that we treasure and value. This looks different to all of us, but one thing is for sure. We are all her slaves, more or less. We all have that within us that craves, that within us that yearns towards. She is such a bright star, so admirably present in both night and early morning. Without Venus, there would be nothing to hold dear.

At the time of writing (8.4.2021), the love goddess is transiting Aries- where she has been keeping close company with the Sun. This energy encourages a healthy degree of self-preservation and self-interest when it comes to our loves and our dollars. Here she insists on TRUTH and nothing but the truth, but it might be hard for this truth to come to light with our own needs screaming so loudly in our ears. The urge for impulsive action is at the forefront. Tomorrow doesn’t matter that much to this Venus- not as much as self-expression and self-gratification in the moment. They matter the most today.

Venus in Taurus is completely different altogether. Here, instead of cardinal fire, we have fixed earth. This is the sign of the Bull, that most ancient of all fertility symbols which has been sacred to many cultures from the beginning of time until now:

Bronze statue of a charging bull (Wall Street)

From Wall Street…

To Ancient Egypt!

Horned animals represent the union of the masculine and feminine in general. Like a snake, the horn resembles both the vagina and the phallus. It is both inward and outward. The ancients understood that all life consists of this intricate merging of opposed forces, that the rebirth and the renewal of our resources comes from great pain and great ecstacy both.

The bull is a particularly massive and immovable force. This is an energy that moves when it wants to, in its own time- like all of Nature itself. It stands four-square and solid on its ground, and protects its cows with its horns. For the ancients, the bull gave fertiliser and a heat source with its dung, nourishment with its meat, clothing with its leather. All kinds of tools could be made with its bones. And with its massive fertility, any bull could make many many more bulls. Not only is this a symbol of life, but a symbol of wealth as well.

Venus in Taurus is Venus at home. Here she will make a solid stand as to what she values, and she will try to accumulate a lot of it. This Venus sign, once comfortable in her viewpoints, is difficult to sway. Her love is enduring beyond measure, but it can be a little suffocating and stultifying when granted to an incompatible recipient. But she is wise in her ways. She knows not to rush things, not to twist the forces of fate. Venus in Taurus, like all other Taurus placements, can take her time.

The dark side of this Venus is laziness, gluttony, possessiveness and taking her possessions for granted. I can see this being a hoarder placement, in which the endless gathering of material things could serve as a means to stave off any psychic unpleasantness. Taurus can feel a little uncomfortable when things start getting rocky, and can act the tyrant in trying to secure her place. With this transit, we will try and secure our relationships more and more, but we will have to be careful not to be dictatorial about it.

This year, Venus in Taurus will be activating Jupiter in Aquarius, Saturn in Aquarius- and of course, Uranus in Taurus. There’s a new awareness that is trying to break through, and some particuarly stubborn heads might not want to hear it or be a part of it. The upcoming Full Moon in Scorpio on the 27 April signals the release of some of this stuck energy. But remember, with this fixed energy it can hurt like hell to let go- but what we do need to let go of is not just for our good, but for the good of the collective. We are being called to build things that *endure*, that can bring wealth and enjoyment not only for our future but for that of the children growing around us.

I recommend the reader take this time to consider a new approach that will help them gain enduring stability in the long run. It might be time to make peace with others, to discover how to work as part of a team with those we have had differences with. Or- we may simply wish to work with the wisdom we have gained, but strike out on our own. Above all else, hearken to your intuition as to what Spirit has in store for you. Remain mindful in the moment; presuppossing every movement does not deliver us from anything, but can only cause more stress. This is a very bountiful energy for those of us who can harness it and allow a fresh new perspective to break through x

SUN IN ARIES

Oh boy… oh crikey… oh crumbs… oh waow : )

As the author is an Aries Sun, you must permit me to first perform a little fanfare. The Sun is in exaltation in Aries, and of course we are known for our ego. It definitely gives me great pleasure to describe the energy of the vernal equinox and of the first zodiac sign, the wild and wooly child of Mars.

As we know, the stars and planets themselves move in cycles. One of the great realisations you will come to through working with astrology is that, truly, beginnings and ends are only in our heads. Energy expresses itself in these cycles in far deeper and more subtler ways than we can easily conceive of. For they are born of how our ancestors moved in synch with the earth and its seasons, and with the many other realms of beings that coexist among us.

The Vernal equinox is, in the Northern hemisphere, the tipping point of Spring. Here, the last prunings of Winter and the murkier moments of Pisces season are settled away into our bellies. The flowers and new babies are popping up everywhere. Ducklings, lambs, baby chickens, green leaves on trees are shooting forth, peeping and bleating in symphony. There is all kinds of joy and abundance, and the whole world is in a hurry! For it is time to get frolicking, fornicating and planting- while the sun is bright and the days are perfect for doing so. The world is new born, like a fresh little baby. And the air is loud with the celebration of birth, and the music of its cries.

The Aries Sun is born with springtime celebration in its veins. This sign does not like to stay down in the dumps and will haphazardly charge at a situation because it feels morbid and uncomfortable to think too much about it. As this is the energy of cardinal fire, not much can stop this energy once it ignites- but like springtime itself, the energy can burn out by itself all too soon. The Aries Sun will need quite a few stabilising placements in order to not spend life as an eternal initiator who never really settles down to one enduring career or relationship. Even the famous Arian temper will quickly burn out and be replaced with a childlike innocence. Aries is often stunned when another Sun sign holds onto a resentment that Aries has processed far more quickly due to their healthy relationship with their own rage.

This is someone who, above all else, wants to go fast. Not only is this zodiac sign full of bright new energy and greedy to explore all the pleasures of life, but there is a memory in Aries’ bones of the death-time of Pisces. This soul begins a new cycle with the consciousness of the old one still on board and the full awareness that time is short and that life is a magnificent smorgasbord of incredible experiences. There is no time to linger, because that time wasted can be spent having a different variety of thrill that would otherwise be missed… and Aries would hate to miss out on all the fun. If you’re being tailgated in traffic, I would bet the person doing that would have strong Aries placements in their chart.

Physically, this type tends to be muscular, with a loud voice and strong forehead. Aries will often have a forehead scar, due to their headstrong behaviour (I myself have one, from climbing on furniture as a toddler). They are prone to accidents, especially involving fire and heat, due to their own impatience. The women are usually attractive, but with a certain masculine quality to them- it could be the boxing mitts and baseball bat rolling around in their vehicle, or it could be in the way they yell when excited. Either way, Aries is usually tremendously healthy and hard to knock down. The head of the ram is like steel plating and will barely register a tremor after smashing the most tremendous obstacle.

When the Sun is in Aries, it is a fabulous time to initiate and celebrate a new beginning. Now, as an Aries Sun I can offer you my wisdom in saying that although the new beginning itself might not be successful, the fact that you tried will in itself engender some positive change in your circumstances. Anything has got to be better than being stuck with the grim and the cobwebs of last year’s winter all over us still… The time to begin a new story is now!

As Aries is ruled by the God of war, sex and passion, we may be feeling the urge to charge after a new love interest in particular. Of course, spring is the breeding season as well as anything else. Do know that if you are going to be hasty, that is better than never having made a go at it. The gods always reward courage, even if it seems like that reward might be long in coming. Tune into your intuition, because this is an extremely intuitive sign as well! You will know what to do!

VENUS CONJUNCT NEPTUNE

At the time of writing, we are fast approaching the New Moon in Pisces of March 2021. We are just about to hit the Aries equinox. The air is heavy with madness, poetry, the whisperings of ancestors. Men and women all over the globe are tapping into these intuitive energies, getting out their tarot cards, saging their auras, maybe smoking a bit of kif or getting into some wormwood tea to help along the visions. We may be in our place of yearning, we may be in our place of being. Venus conjunct Neptune is making one thing clear, however- we are all here together, tapped into the one thing that is true. And that is that the truth is elusive! It comes in its own time. Its a free unit, like you and like me.

Today I would like to delve into one of my favourite energies to delve into, and that is the energy of Venus conjunct Neptune, whether it presents itself in transit, in your birth chart, or in synastry. For this can be the ultimate drug and the ultimate nightmare, and as a 12th house Scorpio Moon I have come to terms with the existence of both… the best way I can!

Both of these beings (Venus and Neptune) are born of the sea, which is in and of itself (of course) a symbol. All models of the psyche that I have so far encountered in my studies of Jung, Thelema, Qabalah, Buddhism, alchemy and even Christianity have an awareness of this sea that is common to all living beings. For you and I are like the ocean; mostly water and full of the unfathomable. It is something that is within us all, but it difficult to grasp or to quantify. Also, it contains any number of secrets! This is the collective unconscious, the storehouse of a gazillion fermenting energies, the subterranean strangeness that mirrors life on land, but runs deeper darker and more savage.

This does not seem to make much sense when it comes to Venus except when you consider that what we value is often born of what we collectively value. However, Venus is a little closer to earth than the place she was birthed from. It keeps closer company with the Sun (the conscious I), it is more visible and tangible. That which is of Venus is a little closer to our ego desires and our drive for survival.

Neptune is further out there and is invisible to us, except when we use powerful telescopes and binoculars. This energy is more nebulous and difficult to quantify, oh but when we meet with it it calls us deep- very deep, into the boundlessness of deep space. It promises something amazing, something limitless and bursting with treasure- and indeed it is, as the psyche is absolutely rich with all of the abundance that can ever be imagined.

When these two come together, their energies become intermingled. Venus moves deeper and into uncharted waters. The boundaries of earth and air dissolve, dissapear, become unknown under the rising tide. What we value becomes something far more ethereal and intangible than our mere physical survival or ego presence, we tap into our deeper divinity. We flow in and out, kicking our feet against the submerged patterns that link us together, and we experience a more transcendant form of joy and love.

But we also move in danger. Venus might move too deep too soon, and start swimming in psychic waters that are heavy with waves and hostile mermen- she may panic, start clinging too hard to control- which of course is the worst thing to do when drowning. Things get mixed and unclear when we, afraid for our survival, try too vigorously to interpret what is not of the more mundane level of reality. Then we get ourselves in the crap.

With Venus-Neptune, it is important to remember that all is as it will be and should be. This is not a familiar place, but you are closer to its nature than you realise. What is being thrown up into your awareness here is simply a mirror of either your faith in Divinity or your lack of faith in Divinity. Please listen to the collective murmur your gods and your ancestors coming over the waves. You are here, you are safe… We got you… we love you!

MERCURY IN PISCES

Anyone feeling a bit out of sorts? At the time of writing, the Sun is conjunct Neptune in Pisces and the waning crescent moon is moving ever closer to the Dark Moon in Pisces. We might be feeling extremely psychically receptive- very aware of the energies around us, positive and negative. Or we might feel a little lost and confused- one minute bright and optimistic, the next down in the doldrums. The Sun is the light by which we move, and when Neptune clouds those things can get a little freaky. Be brave of heart! All of this is only temporary, whether you are moving through heaven- or through hell.

Mercury is inhabiting the final degrees of Aquarius, and will soon transit into Pisces. Therefore, I am taking this time today to write an article on this wonderful Mercury placement.

Mercury is in detriment in Pisces, as many of us know. Yet, a planet in detriment is not necessarily “bad” any more than a planet in domicile is “good”.

When a planet is in fall or in detriment, it simply does not find its ease of expression there. This is a place where the planet’s energy is a little out of place, a little alien. However- nothing is quicker and more adaptable than Mercury, planet of wit and expression. Although Mercury operates easier in the more nitpicky climes of Virgo or the chatty-cathy Land of Gemini, watery Pisces offers a breadth of expression and depth of creativity that is not easily accessible to individuals with a more clear-cut mental focus.

For Pisces rules the twelfth house, as we all know. This is the final house of the zodiac, the limitless vortex comprised of multitudes of worlds- worlds that are mostly nameless, boundless, undiscovered. It is also the abode of sleep, of death, and it is where memories go into forgetfulness so that they may be recycled into new experiences. The Mercury in Pisces native will most likely not be able to run up a spreadsheet with ease and precision, or write a traditionally crafted essay with any degree of crispness and skill. However, this person would be able to commune with beings the rest of us are incapable of understanding. Their dreams would be rich with symbolism and guidance from the deeper cores of the mind. And they would most likely be skilled on the business end of a paintbrush or piano keyboard.

When Mercury is in Pisces, the mind goes into deep space. Here we will be more psychic, more receptive to the other side- especially as Neptune is in Pisces currently as well. I also like to think of this as a time we can offer up our consciousness for deep healing, deep cleansing. Is there someone or something we need to forgive? Is there a mindset we need to lay by the wayside? Mercury in Pisces will help us run cleansing salt water through our neurons and synapses to free ourselves from the restrictions that have burdened us mentally until now. For things have been pretty heavy, and they will continue to be pretty heavy from time to time.

However, this isn’t really a great time to hope for great precision, or clear communication with others. Things are going to get a little murky, which is what must happen before they get clear. Don’t freak out if you do prefer clarity- the lovely thing about Mercury is it moves quickly. Soon enough, Mercury will be in Aries and it will be time for clarity to yell itself straight up your nostrils and into your frontal lobe!

Mercury will be in Pisces from March 16 2021- April 4 2021 (NZ time) 🙂

Intimate wreckage: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Synastry

I have to say I have been somewhat reluctant to cover this topic, as it is such a thorny one. There’s heated accusations floating around regarding racism and other ugly things like that. Let me be clear: I myself don’t believe that anyone is superior or inferior because of ethnicity or skin colour. I just want to cover Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s synastry, because it’s so interesting!

I admit to only one prejudice and that is a prejudice against the wealthy and privileged. I know they are human beings like everyone else, but what I struggle with is the perspective that I have that they have not lived and suffered in the same way as we do. If they have mental illness, they have all the best help in the world at their disposal. They don’t have to choose between paying a counselor and paying for food and rent. So how dare they want to be treated the same as us?

However, maybe the problem here is that anyone who would want to help you when you are rich is usually only going to want to help you because of the megabucks that can be brought their way. And, when it comes down to it, no matter what you have there is nothing between you and your own mind and the choices that you and I choose to make.

Yet- is it even possible to understand these people and the choices that they have to make, the burdens that they have to bear? The full perspective is always going to be difficult to gain, and it is always going to be somewhat clouded if we have the news media in our ear on the subject telling us what we should or should not think. Yet, astrology can give us the biggest possible hope we have of ever uncovering the truth behind a situation. For you don’t have to be a genius to sense that there is something very deep at play here.

The first thing I would like to look at is Markle’s chart. Who is this person? What are her motives? Is she saint, sinner, victim or victimiser? Or- is she none of these things, which would be the obvious answer? Who is she, instead?

The first thing that’s immediately noticeable is that there’s quite a lot of rough stuff floating around her fourth house, and her Moon. This to me indicates a lot of complexity in her past and in her family of origin. Ancestrally, there is a strain of hidden power, but of turmoil and horror as well. I feel like this soul has come forth with the idea of balancing the scales.

She has the Moon in Libra, which is normally gracious, sociable and able to shed emotional burdens with relative ease. However, Markle’s Moon is conjunct a Saturn-Jupiter conjunction, and square Mars. There is a terrific burden of restriction on this person’s mind, that is not so much heavy like lead at rest- it more resembles a storm of lead, lead bullets. If anyone overthinks and wants to please everyone while at the same time being relentlessly certain that it is *impossible* to please everyone, it is this person. She stands the risk of defeating herself before she even takes her first breath of the day, because she cares too damn much about what everyone else thinks. This is further highlighted by her south node in the seventh house- she comes from an origin of people pleasing, bending to everyone else’s will.

Jupiter in there will be a mixed blessing. It will lighten the mental and emotional load somewhat, but it will also amplify things. She can be overly judgemental and critical, and much of this judgement and criticism will be leveled against herself. Her mother and her half-sister have obviously similiarly been a mixed blessing for her (the mother is represented by the Moon, siblings by the third house).

The next thing I notice is her Sun in Leo, in the first house. This is a very confident and self-focused (might be self-centrered) Sun. It sextiles the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter. Her inner and outer world are in harmony. She definitely suffers, but she does not usually struggle to open up about what’s going on inside her. That Leo Sun craves admiration and applause, but as it occupies the sign and house of the North Node, it might take time for it to be at peace with its Libra/Aquarius instincts to stand back and let someone else shine first. Mercury sextiles the same Libra planets but is conjunct the Sun- this person is smart as hell, but can get tripped up by their own ambition and desire to suceed.

She has a focussed yod to Chiron as well- which is definitely of extreme importance in the synastry. Chiron in the eleventh in Taurus can represent a social outcast, which further plays into a general lack of earth in this chart. Of course, the eleventh house is ruled by Aquarius, which corresponds to her South Node. Here she is fated to leave the commonality of humanity behind, and the sense of security that can give her. She is driven to create something new (Uranus in the 5th opposite Chiron in the 11th), something ordained by a higher spiritual destiny than that of which she may be consciously aware (Neptune sextile Uranus).

Lastly, she has Mars in the 12th house in Cancer. This is a deeply afflicted Mars, in my estimation at least. Mars does not function in a normal capacity in the 12th, and it does not function normally in Cancer as well. Men can be hidden enemies for her. In her childhood, it was not acceptable for her to express her angers or her desires in any normal kind of way. It has become crushed, it comes out sideways and eats her up from within. She certainly does still feel anger, and she’s quite an angry person with that heavy first house and that said Mars square to the Moon, Saturn and Jupiter. However, she will be more than likely passive-aggressive and covert in her expressions of anger. Anytime anything does not go her way, it would be associated in her mind with a thousand ancient wrongs going back to the beginning of time. This is the kind of person who, if you accidentally spill water on her- would be certain you did it on purpose and that you secretly hate her. She would know that because she has all the receipts on every other little thing that you did. With this Mars and her big ego, she would quite likely feel personally victimised if the toilet paper is the wrong way around on the holder- let alone when she has struggles with the British Royal Family. Did she bully staff? Quite likely. Is she a victim of a conspiracy? That goes deeper.

Why does she keep these receipts, why would she respond in this way? Growing up, that was the safest way for her to manage the environment she was living in. It is not her fault, but it is how she responds. And could this soul have similar receipts against the British Royal Family- receipts of dark and convoluted karma that we can only guess at? It might all look absurd on surface level, but on a deeper level this soul has something to speak up against.

So much for Meghan. Now let’s dig into Harry’s chart!

Harry is a triple Earth- Sun, Moon and ascendant are all in earth signs. With Saturn sextile his ascendant, this is someone with a keen sense of responsibility. He has low air- he finds it hard to stay detached and objective. His mind can struggle to find release from the overthinking characterised by his Virgo Sun and his Mercury square Uranus and sextile Pluto. Where he does find release, relief and perspective is in his love life- his Venus is in air (Libra), sextile to Uranus and Mars (both in Sagittarius). This Venus is, however, in the eighth house. He can tend towards becoming enmeshed, codependent, overly reliant on the other to provide emotional support. This is especially true with his South Node in Scorpio, in the tenth house. He needs to come down to earth and stop trying to keep such a tight grip on circumstances, to find his own bastion of comfort and security in emulating the mother in his own self (Moon in Taurus in the fourth house).

Moon in Taurus cannot forgive or forget easily, it is as stubborn as the Moon in Scorpio in this way- perhaps even more so. There are quite a lot of abandonment issues within this chart, with Jupiter and Neptune in their home turf (the 12th house) and Neptune square the Sun. With a T-square to Mercury in the eighth, this is someone with very serious and intense thought patterns. Underneath it all, however, this person does not know who they are underneath all of the responsibility.

This is not the chart of someone who would cheerfully abandon the comfort and security that comes with being a member of any royal family. That Sun is acutely conscious of power dynamics, and being threatened by both Neptune and Mars it will be happiest being top of the heap, in a role where its Virgo nature can feel it is doing some good. The Taurus Moon in the fourth house adores fine things and a comfortable home, and will not appreciate upheaval. This person doubts themselves and everyone else, and is terrified of enmeshment. This is a cynical person, who trusts noone and nothing.

What happens when the two come together? How did this brazen American with the twisted temper win the trust of this sly and cynical worry-warrior? Let’s check out the synastry:

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's synastry chart

All I can say is that I’m stunned!

This is no ordinary synastry. All my reader has to do is look at not only Harry’s Pluto squaring Meghan’s nodal axis, but also look at Harry’s Moon setting off the Yod to Meghan’s Chiron. I don’t see things like this often, but this is a marker of Fate that has been set in place via higher beings- many centuries ago. These two were destined to meet and Harry was destined to be the foundation for her outcast’s mission- a mission that will raise and elevate the both of them.

Chiron-Moon is not an easy aspect, but it is one that is often seen in the charts of married couples. Chiron will feel a responsibility towrads the mental and emotional wellbeing of the Moon. They will also see that the Moon has something to offer them that can relieve their innate suffering. This is something that wears thin over time… as the Moon tires of being conscious of Chiron’s hurt all the time. There is a potential for emotional growth and healing with this aspect, but it is not easy.

Worryingly, Meghan’s somewhat nasty Mars is exact on Harry’s descendant. He accepts any abuse with good grace, as her Mars trines his well-practiced Saturn. But as his Saturn squares her Sun and sextiles her Venus as well, I would counsel them both (were I their astrologer) that any steps taken backward by him are not because he doesn’t care for her, but because he’s concerned for their wellbeing. Harry would not be an assertive person at all- his own Sun square to Neptune gives him that weak sense of self that is quite happy to piggyback off Meghan’s stronger character. She definitely would wear the pants in this dynamic.

For of course, that is her Pluto conjunct his Venus. I did write earlier that her Pluto comes out of the depths of her family history, calling out to redress a wrong. This Pluto cozies up to his Venus, which is of course the dispositor of his Moon. She is interested in his wealth and his family background, make no mistake about that. However… when it comes to Pluto-Venus synastry, it is usually Pluto that enriches Venus, not the other way around.

Do they love one another? Absolutely. Pluto-Venus is a strong love bond that can be hellish at times, but is extremely hard to break. Venus finds intense validation in Pluto’s strong feelings and Harry is susceptible to this, as he finds a lot of relief in the expression of his Venus. Sun-Venus (Harry’s Sun, Meghan’s Venus) is a love bond, and Meghan’s Leo planets fall in Harry’s descendant- he sees her as a friend, someone he can relate to. His Mars trines her Sun- he is certainly attracted to her. But alas, I also see Mars square Venus- someone does not feel the physical attraction quite as much, and I think it would be her.

I find it interesting that Meghan’s Libra stellium squares Harry’s Capricorn Jupiter in the 12th. There is a subtle quality to him that amplifies her emotional intensity, but she is definitely interested in his wealth and status (again)- especially as so many of her planets fall in his eighth house, house of shared resources.

=====

So what is the future for these two? Will they stand together despite the controversy that is being thrown at them? What is the higher purpose behind this all?

I personally think that in time it will grow to be too much for Harry. His heart has been won by such a strong application to his eighth house energy, but there is nothing of enduring peace in this for him, which is what he craves most of all at a soul level. For him it is time to leave behind these high intensity dramas and rediscover his own value and his own foundations in his own way.

However, in order to do this he must first meet this woman and offer his Pluto- his regenerative, transformative power- to the wheels of her own fate. And she must offer her pain and her suffering to his roots and his family. There must be an exchange of power, wealth, resources. Harry will catapult Meghan to the fame and glory that it is hers to discover in this life, and she will bring him gently back to the earth he has been seeking with his whole being, his whole life.

MARS IN GEMINI

Life is an incredible adventure filled with thrills, spills and cocoa beans. It is all a journey, a diverse and wonderful journey- which is what Mars in Gemini comes to teach us.

Mars in Gemini: An overview.

Gemini is, of course, the sign of the twins. This is the point at which the tree of life begins to branch, bud and separate. Here, we do not have a baby as with Aries or a toddler as with Taurus. We have the growing child, who runs off to explore the big wild wide world with far more confidence. For Gemini is on a search for something- a search for something to complete it, with still the scertain and cynical awareness that the search will never fully be completed. The twins, in losing one another, find one another here in the search. It can be fun to be a child and play, but it can be equally hell as well.

Mars in Gemini: Fierce little brainbox.

Gemini is an air sign that is famous for its wit and its intellect. The Mars in Gemini native will use words and cleverness as a weapon. If in a corner and needing to defend themselves, they will try and outsmart the enemy- or they may use gossip and deception as a tactic. Their minds may rage and be in warfare against them and they might find it hard to settle down and stay in one place. This is an intellectual butterfly, who enjoys knowledge but might struggle to stick with a certain discipline. They are definitely intelligent, and even difficult aspects to this Mars will only weaponise and diversify this intelligence as opposed to disarming it. They will likely have challenging times at school and may be bullied as children. Male siblings are likely as well, who bring a bit of mayhem into the household.

Mars in Gemini: Social butterfly.

Mars in Gemini loves to talk, and loves to be social. This is someone who may feel quite offended by violence in its more physical sense, as they consider themselves to not be that motivated by the body and its physical demands. Women with this placement are likely attracted to intelligence and quickwittedness as opposed to brawn and attractiveness. Yet, despite all of this airy energy, there is still a deep and restless need to be united with this elusive other.

The “two faced” thing does not have to be true for every Mars in Gemini person, but there is a dual nature to this sign. This person can sometimes lose who they are, if they are not careful- in their need to be flexible, adapt, survive with their wits. The Mars in Gemini person should take care to stay grounded and not invent crises in their mind that cause them to self-sabotage.

Mars in Gemini: What happens during these transits?

When Mars is in Gemini, relationships take a bit of a turn in their dynamics of pursuit and retreat, of push and pull. There will be more restlessness between not so solid couples. I’m not a believer in twin flames as such but I do understand the journey in the sense of a search that takes the seeker into a deeper awareness of their own inherent divinity. Such journeys will be much more on spotlight.

Also, there will be a greater emphasis on communication, on talking things out and working things out as a collective. New ideas will be sought after, ways of turning what is old and pungent into what is fresh and capable of bearing new life. More violence may be done with words, and I note that the descendant of the United States is in Gemini. Some international enemies might come out into the open when Mars transits that sign, for that nation in particular!
