It goes without saying that not everything New Age is terrible. Like everything, there is good and bad in every movement. The problem at any given time is dogmatism and the potential for exploitation.
It is so interesting to me how the promise of something usually entails the opposite. A shortcut on your journey turns out to be the long way. Something tasty may sit horribly in your stomach. Love and light can lead to hatred and darkness. All of these things are fine, they are just part of life. But there is a potential to stay too stuck in any given energy because of *fear* and self-imposed limitations and restrictions, that needs to be warned against. While you are in the cage, you might find yourself dolled and dyed up- you may find yourself sold off to the meat grinder, again and again, for some other being’s benefit.
There is a giant error and flaw that is pushed and marketed relentlessly towards people through the guise of spirituality: this is about focusing on light, and about a war between light and darkness that demands our intervention and total focus. Basically the idea seems to be that we should be focusing on what we desire, here and now- and pushing as much happy-happy energy into it so that we can get it.
This is perfect for a box-macaroni and appearance-obsessed culture that has largely rejected God, that feels uncomfortable at the word. I think I’m going to make a point to use it! The hallmark is a focus on instant gratifcation and the promise of total fulfilment through something easy like- oh, I don’t know, a course in chakra realignment or guided meditations that will focus love energy into one’s surroundings and bring in all kinds of love and riches. But there is absolutely no mention of anything uncomfortable like- doing the correct thing by other people involved, or hard work, or spiritual growth and transformation. The focus is all on exterior gain, and not on the mind- on temporary things, on temporary states of mind that are bound to change eventually when the inevitabilities of life catch up with us.
That is another problem I see with how a lot of things are presented as well. There is a lot of emphasis on controlling things and how they will happen, what we will get etc etc. It is better to let *go* of control, find ways of letting go. Olympic medalists don’t think and plan their way through every one of their incredible movements, they simply move by instinct. You do not need a thousand expensive things sold by tie-dye internet individuals in order to get you to that state, you just need you, your meditation cushion and your basic bodily needs fulfiled.
Remember the only thing that will persist after physical death is your mind, your soul, and your karma. You cannot take your partner, car or cute crystal collection with you into the afterlife- not even if you are a Pharoah, or believe you were in a past life. But you can sure as hell bring your regrets with you, and also the good things you did!
The New Age gives us liberation in that nothing is off limits, although a lot of people in that movement will be seriously challenged if you direct them to practice that is not focused on instant gratification. I would like to see as much introspective honesty and rigorous self-discipline injected into that movement as there is mumbo-jumbo channelings and expensive crystals dug out of the ground by extremely poor people. Eventually there will be, because the truth always prevails.
I will share with you a vision that was shown to me. I’ve shared it before, but not on this blog, and it was perhaps the most powerful thing I have ever been granted to “see”.
I was shown our world in its place on the arm of a spiral galaxy, and shown how the spiral galaxy was rotating. That rotation was inducing the slow movement of our world towards the centre of the galaxy, which is filled with a higher concentration of light, of stars. I was told- “hands off!” Nothing more needed to be said, Spirit is always very blunt with me.
Find out how to let go. Figure out how to let go. Be yourself and be honest and truthful and work as hard as you need to work in order to exploit others as little as possible. That’s all you need to do, God can do the rest.
This is a great meme, and set off a long train of thought for me today. Neptune in synastry is one of my favourite things to think about.
As human beings, we struggle more or less with our own wholeness. Neptune as an archetype represents unity with the Divine- limitless, true, utter spiritual love. What sounds more awesome than that? Truly, nothing is more awesome than that. Running a synastry chart, we may see someone’s Neptune hitting our Venus and read the descriptions of absolute love and devotion and think wow, someone is actually going to love me like this…
The truth is far more amazing, empowering and complex than that. You see, when we run across Neptune, we are shown a mirror and a spiritual gateway. It is much like the 11:11 portal, the 4 of wands card- all of these things tie very much in together. We do touch God when we touch Neptune, and we touch divine union. We come into contact with our own magicians’ power that enables us to manifest our most transcendant and limitless desires. But can what is true and real live in perfect harmony with what is not?
Neptune will reflect like the surface of the sea, or the surface of the pond that drowned Narcissus. What does it reflect?
At first, it will show us what we want to see. Then, in time, it will show us that which we really need to see and get to know, in order to become whole. Those parts of ourselves we never loved, but which we must love in order to fully love ourselves.
If you hate and fear lies, Neptune in synastry may bring you someone who lies. At first they seemed to be everything you ever wanted, then they turned around and became everything you ever hated. But that allure of the ideal and the experiences of one’s blossoming spirituality will draw one into a dance with this mirror image- and in time you will notice there is no distinction. Everything that is driving you crazy with love and hate is here. It is what C G Jung called “the shadow”- the disowned parts of ourselves that we need to integrate into our being, in order to be empowered and whole.
The love and light gurus have it all completely wrong and I do believe that path will keep people stuck and victimised (which is a topic for another article). We are not beings of pure light, we are beings of equal light and darkness. It isn’t about turning away from our/ other people’s negative behaviours but about calmly accepting and embracing them. This makes more sense on a neurological level. If we can quit our extreme reactions to things, we can stop sending energy down neural pathways and programming ourselves into set patterns. Greater equanimity and unity allows us to deprogram ourselves and find the liberty within our hearts and minds to change our thinking. Only with a brain that is relatively free of stuck ideas and desires and obsessive thinking and unified with our own intrinsic strength and power can we look towards knowing ourselves as who we truly are, and then set after the goals that resonate with us on a soul level. With self-love, anything is possible- and we are all worthy of it!

At the time of writing, the author has recently survived transit Pluto squaring her Venus, Mercury and Sun. The author also has her natal Pluto in Scorpio conjunct her Moon in Scorpio, and square her chart ruler (Jupiter). Pluto in Astrology is something she really feels she knows about, although Pluto is of course impossible to know in full.
Pluto! God of death, the underworld- plutonium… How can the atom bomb be our friend? I am reminded of the words of Carl Jung:
“This involves Man in a new responsibility. He can no longer wriggle out of it on the plea of his littleness and nothingness, for the dark God has slipped the atom bomb and chemical weapons into his hands and given him the power to empty out the apocalyptic vials of wrath on his fellow creatures. Since he has been granted an almost godlike power, he can no longer remain blind and unconsciou. He must know something of God’s nature and of metaphysical processes if he is to understand himself and thereby acheive gnosis of the Divine.”
Pluto is both our power and our lack of power. Blowing the whole world up into bits over a quarrel is not really power, is it? Controlling our relationships, our thought processes- fear and emptiness- that isn’t power. That is our attempt to be powerful, but it merely reflects our own powerlessness. However, it will lead us to chase power into a showdown of apocalyptic fury that will tear us into tiny, tiny pieces.
Death! Rebirth. Being pushed to the brink and being unable to take it any longer and forced, kicking and screaming, into the new form. I have talked to a soul on the brink of the underworld itself who lingered in the in-between because he was scared to walk into something he thought of as a “turbine”. For real, metamorphosis is a real chewing-up and spitting-out.
And yes, death does teach us to be responsible. It brings us back to the solid reality of our lives, that we are absolutely one hundred percent responsible for our own salvation, our own regeneration. Pluto, once unleashed, will not tolerate any weakness, any hanging-on to what is no longer needed and is now untrue. It hurts, but being human hurts by necessity, and death is just another birth- pain and agony will precede both.

When it comes to synastry, it can be amazingly illustrative to peek into the lives of famous people. Yet we must always remember to listen to what the charts are telling us, and not what we think we know about these individuals. Nothing lies to us more than the mainstream news media, except perhaps gutter tabloids and history lessons. So now, let’s have some fun with Big Ears and his own fairytale ending! The synastry of King Charles and Queen Camilla has a lot of interesting things to show us!
To get a good grip on synastry between two individuals, it’s best to study the individual charts first. Here’s King Charles’ chart:
Phew! Mummy AND daddy issues!
The first thing I was drawn to here was the Ceres-Pluto conjunction in the first house, in Leo. Leo Rising can be needy and narcissistic at its worst, and with Pluto in there as well this can manifest itself as the ultimate boomer mentality. Ceres is the nurturer, the Earth Goddess, the Mother Divine- which explains Charles’ fascination with organic farming and drive to promote that brand of living to others. But when we see that the Moon is also at a critical degree in its sign of exaltation (Taurus) and that packed fourth house including the south node, the comfort zone- we see someone who has been strongly influenced by the mother and perhaps overly coddled and suppressed by them as well. Interestingly that 0 degree Taurus moon is in conjunction to the North Node and trines Saturn in the second house, so emotional maturity and self-worth would have been a work in progress for this man for quite some time. Maybe an especially long time, given how long Taurus can take to do anything.
It is interesting to note that Queen Elizabeth was a Taurus Sun, Leo Moon. You can really see her influence all over this chart. Prince Philip was also a Leo Moon- but a Gemini Sun. Looking at Mercury in this chart, you see that it is in trine to Uranus in Gemini and in conjunction to the South Node. Charles is undoubtedly a highly intelligent man, maybe even brilliant- he would owe much of this to his father, who otherwise shows up as somewhat absent and repressive. I will also mention that the South Node in Scorpio/ Cancer as shown here is highly psychic and intuitive, so Charles would definitely have an interest in astrology and the occult.
As for the Sun, I am seeing a square to Pluto and a conjunction to Chiron here. This is not good news for Charles’ sense of self. Charles’ fifth house also contains his Sag Mars and Jupiter. You can see the playboy prince here, but a Scorpio/Leo Chiron on the Sun screams that there are terrible blocks and restrictions on this person’s ability to assert their own individuality. That first house Leo Pluto squaring a fourth house Scorpio Sun reveals someone whose drive to succeed in gaining the things they want is at odds with their own sensitive, emotional, rather introverted nature. Struggles against a dominant father and the restrictive nature of this person’s ancestry (the fourth house is all about where we come from in that regard) can make Charles his own worst enemy at times. Black Moon Lilith in Pisces is in the 8th house as well, this man strongly disavows any sort of dependency on others- but this is a fact of his life that he can’t ignore.
Obviously there is more, but it will not serve us to go into too detailed of a reading of this chart.
Now to get into Camilla’s chart!
She seems like a sweetheart…
As you can see, she has both the Sun and Moon in Cancer. This is bound to feel deeply familiar and reassuring to someone who has the South Node in Cancer, Pluto conjunct Ceres, Moon at 0 degrees Taurus- etc etc. She has so much in the 12th house as well and trines, squares and sextiles to her Neptune on the 4th house. There is something quite complex about Camilla’s upbringing as well, and I would not hesistate to say that she can be quite vulnerable, moody and prone to depression. The Moon in the 12th House loves to brood, but in domicile and in conjunction to Venus and square to Neptune as well, this person can take it to a bit of an extreme. Her Chiron is in the 4th house as well, along with Jupiter. This is a person who holds absolutely worlds inside her, but in a very secretive manner and close to her heart. I would not be fooled by the cheery public horse-riding persona, that’s her Gemini Mars and Leo Rising (with Saturn-Pluto) putting quite the spin on things. The way for such a person to cope would be to have that privacy and seclusion they need, and to dedicate themselves to a cause or practice that gives them the opportunity to express their deep feelings. Camilla would be more than happy to be a domestic goddess, in fact, she’s born to be one.
I don’t have as much to say about Camilla’s chart. My attention is called to Black Moon Lilith in the 6th house in Capricorn opposite her 12th house Cancer Sun, and that Saturn-Pluto conjunction in the ascendant. The latterly mentioned conjunction is not a very close one, but it speaks to me of those crises in self in youth that would have matured into a force to be reckoned with. Especially with a sextile to Mars in the 11th house and Pluto squaring Jupiter in the 4th house, this person may feel the odds conspire against them at times but they are able to turn all of this to their advantage- into prosperity! with patient regeneration through seas of pain and insecurity.
Black Moon Lilith here will winkle Camilla out of hiding and into public service roles, as deadly as she will find them. She has Ceres in Taurus in the 10th house, and Saturn on the ascendant. As much as she wants to be in her comfort zone, she must leave it in order to acheive the higher octave of the woman that she is. The Goddess demands she be in the public eye.
Oh dear…
The first thing that is very striking about this is that the two have their rising sign conjunct in Leo. This will definitely help a couple overcome struggles that they face together, because their lifes’ path is the same. I would expect to see this in fated couples, or people in general who are destined to bump into each other time and time again. I see a lot of charts with the descendant on the ascendant, but that is more indicative of a relationship that is binding but not necessarily harmonious.
There is a lot of harmony here. And, also, a distinct lack of it. If you go looking for problems, you immediately see that their Venuses are square, and Camilla’s sensitive Moon is squared by Charles’ Venus. This couple has different needs when it comes to romance and feeling loved and secure. Charles has Neptune on his Libra Venus as well, so he might be as fantastical, idealistic and perfectionistic in his love relationships as Camilla is with her Moon-Venus in Cancer in the 12th. Libra is more intellectual and Cancer more emotional- Cancer will want to feel their way through things whereas Libra will want to analyse and Taurus will want to feel grounded. However, the couple share some excellent Mercury aspects and their Mercuries are compatible generally- which will help them talk out any difficulties.
I do find it interesting that Camilla has so much in Charles’ 12th house. This explains to me why it took so long for this couple to come together. 12th house overlays are absolutely not for sissies and can come with a lot of trouble, the house person will feel insecure about the planet person and the planet person can tend to see what they want to see.
I do also note that Charles’ Mars isn’t very held down in this chart, although it falls in Camilla’s 5th house. He definitely would have seen her as someone exciting to have sex with, but he would have struggled to commit to her- indeed, he married someone else! It does however conjunct with her Juno RX, which can be a marriage indicator- or it can indicate how their affair disrupted her earlier marriage in particular.
Charles’ NN/SN axis is of particular interest in this synastry. As we all know, the North and South nodes being activated can indicate the path of our karma being worked out in this relationship.
We see Camilla’s Chiron on Charles’ South Node- this couple has experienced pain and wounding together. Most definitely in other lifetimes, not just in this one. Looking to the North Node, however, we see a blessing- we see Ceres.
I have already gone into detail about Charles’ complex relationship with his more feminine side and with the Sacred Feminine in General. This coincides with Camilla’s calling out of solitude and gracious seclusion into a more public role, where she may bring benediction to a larger amount of people through acts of service and devotion, that certainly frighten and challenge her. I believe here we are called to witness a fine karmic balancing of scales of something that we may never know the full details of, that will have gone down in some of the bloodier pages of ancient royal history. Camilla undoubtedly loves Charles- her Pluto in sextile to his Venus grows stronger and sweeter and more protective over time. They are both strongly intutive, and no doubt have a strong sense about the importance of their relationship together.
In many ways this strongly lunar, emotional, secretive relationship may call too much to the comfort zones of both people (especially Charles) to be overly healthy- his South Node is in the Fourth House, and he would have loved to have kept it a secret affair (Scorpio) in order to keep the sweetness of it hidden. Yet his North Node in Taurus and Camilla’s Ceres in conjunction on it calls him to address his self worth and make something more lasting of himself in a *true* committed union with another- Hierophant styles, to the core, not like that empty lie with Diana. In this life, he need not have so much fear of opening his heart to another, the bad old days are been and done.

At the time of writing, Chiron is currently stationing retrograde not far from my natal Venus. With my natal Chiron also on my DC, this is really hammering home the whole concept of Chiron for me. What perfect time to write an article on the subject!
Chiron is not a glamorous entity. I have seen it written by some very weak/ scammy heads that this is a true love asteroid, a marriage asteroid. The truth is far more beautiful and complex than that.
Chiron was a centaur who was known as the wisest and noblest of them all. Son of the Titan Cronus and a nymph, he was the half brother of Zeus. Centaurs were usually considered to be deranged, violent and lustful- like satyrs, but Chiron was different. He had great knowledge of healing and medicine, and trained many heroes. However, in the end he could not heal his own wound, where he was shot by a poisonous arrow. He lives in the constellations forever, honoured by Zeus- with his inoperable, uncurable, unfixable wound.
Chiron reminds me of the good old Serenity Prayer:
“God, grant me the serenity/ To accept the things we cannot change/ Courage to change the things we can/ And the Wisdom to know the difference.”
Where Chiron is in our own chart reminds us of the things we cannot change. It is the wound that cannot heal that connects us to our powerlessness. Our unsolvable pain. Which sounds rather strange if you know how much I talk about our own power!
However. We are NOT powerful when we are disconnected from the Divine and the Divine Plan. We all must realise that we are a part of a great holistic whole, and we cannot be tuned into every single happening. There are still going to be things in our life that we cannot change. Pain will be an ongoing feature of our existence, as much as we despise it. But! The very magic of this powerlessness is the fact that it allows us to connect to something greater than ourselves.
That is the meaning of Chiron when it is talked about as the “Rainbow Bridge”. It is the healing crisis as power surges through our chakras which light up like a rainbow when we plug into the Divine at last. Chiron experiences will help us form connexions from inner planets to outer planets, from lower worlds to higher worlds- and stay safe, secure and serene in our rightful place in the present moment.
Look at this building! It is standing for now, doubtless people live in it. But I can almost guarantee that, in time, there will be a collapse. Should there be no earthquakes or tidal waves or major storms, it will stand strong- but the slightest nudge from outside will knock it down. Very much like a relationship with no foundation, no bones, no Saturn. To understand Saturn in synastry, we have to think like this- with practicality.
Saturn in synastry: Time Lord.
Saturn rules time, structure, discipline, rules and limitations. It can be the point where we hold back from the other, but it is also the taskmaster that ensures things are done *correctly*. We must remember how Capricorn, ruling sign of Saturn, presides over the skeleton- when it comes to the human body. These are the invisible, unglamorous but infinitely necessary structures upon which all other things rest. A human body without a skeleton would be a puddle, a building without foundations or adequate framework will hit the floor.
For there to be adequate Saturn in a synastry chart, I would want to see Saturn aspecting personal planets, or luminaries, or chart rulers. The harmonious aspects are easier to bear than the square, conjunction, inconjunction or opposition. When there is a LOT of Saturn, a lot of harsh Saturn in particular- that building is going to look more like a fortress or a jailhouse, that human body will begin to resemble someone in manacles.
Saturn in synastry: Helpful tips.
As always, it is helpful to work on one’s own Saturn in the natal chart in order to be good with Saturn challenges when they arise. I find Saturn not too easy to please, but easy to understand- Saturn simply requires commitment, self-discipline and patience. To get up with your alarm, to practice meditation and exercise daily, to actually go to work, to be a responsible human being and pay taxes etc- these are the things Saturn demands of us, and rewards well should we acquiesce. For if we neglect that side of things, we may just end up a human puddle with no direction in life or find that all our structures collapse!

Good old Mercury, trickster god, social butterfly, being of quicksilver and brimstone! You can make us a overthinking mess with a scorched-up brain, an impresario, a genius or a fool. Yet one thing is certain, we do need you to help us be human, help us acheive our essential purpose on this earth. Mercury, in synastry your importance is often understated: but the Green Lady makes no such mistakes.
Today I thought I would make a brief rundown on some significant Mercury aspects in synastry. Of course the whole chart needs to be taken into consideration. Merely piecing together aspects does not allow us to come to a competent, holistic understanding of a synastry chart.
Mercury in Synastry: an overview.
Of course, the “good” aspects between two Mercuries are always preferable. Sextile and trine point to a harmoniousness in the two peoples’ thinking and communication styles. For myself personally, I would favour the sextile, as it is invigorating and exciting without being stressful like a square. Mercuries in sextile would strike me as perfect, even between people who do not like to talk. The conjunction is very good as well, these people instinctively know how to speak with one another.
Mercury in Synastry: Mercury/Venus aspects.
Positive Mercury aspects to a partner’s Venus may indicate that Venus would find the Mercury person sexy AND intelligent. The conjunction represents a couple who know how to make each other feel at ease. Squares or oppositions may have to do with unfortunate social blunders in communication. There may also be difficulties in each person making their needs understood.
Mercury in Synastry: Mercury/Mars aspects.
Positive aspects between Mercury and Mars point to exciting communication that get the two stirred up and ready for action. Beware the square, conjunction and opposition, however. The square in particular can lead to arguments par excellence. It would have to be a damned good synastry chart to come out well in my estimation if it contained squares or oppositions between Mercury/Mars or Mercury/Pluto.
Mercury in Synastry: Mercury/Jupiter aspects.
Positive aspects between Mercury and Jupiter would be amazing to have in a teacher/student kind of dynamic. Minds are opened and brought to higher potential in both directions. With harsh aspects, however, both parties could be dictatorial and inflexible with one another. It might be hard for either party to elicit forgiveness or openmindedness.
Mercury in Synastry: Mercury/Saturn aspects.
Positive aspects between Mercury and Saturn can be binding. The couple will feel supported, encouraged and heard by each other. The conjunction, square and opposition aspects can be equally binding, but point to blocks of understanding and miscommunications between the two. Mercury can make Saturn feel insecure, especially if the Saturn person has issues with their natal Mercury.
Mercury in Synastry: Mercury/Uranus aspects.
Positive aspects between Mercury and Uranus are awesome! Uranus is the higher octave of Mercury, and makes a very good companion for him. He can help him to acheive moments of excellence and brilliance. This is an exciting connexion. The square, conjunction and opposition can be just as electrifying and exciting, but perhaps too much so. There can be a flavour of Mars to this as well. Some crazy statements can come out of the woodwork, and cause offence.
Mercury in Synastry: Mercury/Neptune aspects.
Neptune and Mercury aren’t going to go well together unless you’re in creative collaboration. Even the harmonious aspects can lead to deception and a lack of clarity. This is often a telepathic connexion, but be warned not to let your boundaries slip. A 12th house overlay with Mercury can lead to this as well.
Mercury in Synastry: Mercury/Pluto aspects.
Mercury and Pluto in trine or sextile is very all-encompassing and sexy. Pluto wants to know who this person is, how they tick, what they have to offer them. The Mercury person feels something from Pluto that challenges their sense of identity and their thought processes, what they have come to believe about themselves. After meeting Pluto, they won’t ever be quite the same again. The conjunction, square and oppositon represent suspicion, paranoia, obsession and ego battles. These can fry the minds of both parties- until they learn how to let go.
Mercury in Synastry: Mercury/Moon aspects.
With Moon-Mercury, both parties are reminded of childhood- either in a positive or negative sense. This can be a psychic, intuitive connexion. Things can get very emotional between you. The trine is gentle, the sextile emotionally supportive and invigorating. The conjunction are tuned into things the Moon prefers to hide. However, both can discuss easily what is dear to the heart. The square and oppositon are unfortunate, Mercury can often make the Moon feel ill at ease with what they say. Sometimes, they can be too extroverted or introverted for each other.
Mercury in Synastry: Mercury/Sun aspects.
Sun conjunction, trine or sextile Mercury are excellent and reassuring aspects. These can form the basis of many friendships; these people just GET each other. With the square and opposition, however, the two can have ego conflicts and feel distant from one another. With the oppositon in particular, true understanding between the two is elusive.
As Mercury is now in retrograde (causing my last post to disappear!), a lot of people have questions about the significance of Mercury in synastry. It is often overlooked, as I suppose it is not fluffy and romantic like Venus or the Moon, or sexy like Mars or Pluto. But communication does form the backbone of any good relationship. It is not the only possible backbone, but by gum it’s a good backbone to have.
When you consider Mercury in astrology, you recognise that it is both the fastest moving planet and the closest to the Sun. It is the attending satellite to our own ego, our sense of identity and self. How we communicate has a great bearing on how we feel alive and connected to this Earth. When we can’t communicate, we aren’t liable to feel part of the human race. Mercury is an unglamorous workhorse, but it is integral to our identity. It is lifeblood.
Mercury in synastry: how might it play out?
When there is poor Mercury in a synastry chart, we have a couple who have nothing to say to one another. Or there could be misunderstandings, or classic arguments. If there are aspects with Neptune, for instance, watch out- lies! Could be lies, could just be omissions. In any case, solid Mercury is a glue we need to have. We need to be able to talk to our partners, be humans together, work it out and work out our way in the world together.
I am strongly Mercurial myself, having my chart ruler in the third house with a crapton of squares to everything. I am the overthinker par excellence and a wordsmith. For me, Mercury may be doubly important in synastry as opposed to someone who is not so strongly oriented towards communication with others. Remember in synastry to always check the natals first, to see what each individual partner needs. Then you can check the dynamics and how it all fits together.
Part 2 will contain more information on what are considered helpful Mercury aspects in synastry, and what are considered less helpful. Stay tuned!
